4. Now, the hardest part (for me) sometimes is to just
begin.
The room isn’t very pretty. I’ve got an ugly stash in the closet. Motivation is loooow.
But, if I muster up just enough courage to just begin painting the walls, usually it starts looking better really quickly. Look how great that wall looks~it gives a glimmer of hope for the rest of the room and the little shot of excitement I need to keep going.
(wait! before you do anything…take a before picture. Make it look as ugly as possible :) It will feel so good to compare it to your after)
I’ve found that company coming, having friends over, or having a birthday party or picnic, a blog party I want to link up to, just giving myself some kind of deadline helps get things started.
Some like to hit it hard and be done in a weekend, others like to spread it out and do a little here, a little there. If I had my own way, I would just work nonstop (with no interruptions!) until it’s finished, but with a busy family, I have to be content with a few hours on the weekend and an hour here, or 45 minutes there to get things done around here. It’s sloooow, but it does add up quickly and if I do have a deadline, I always seem to be scrambling at the last minute, but that’s how it goes.

As you put the room together, you begin adding in the things you have gathered. DON’T feel like you have to use everything you have collected! Most of the time the less is more principle applies. If you have things left over that didn’t quite fit, don’t feel one ounce of guilt for getting rid of them. If I know I’ll use it in another space, I’ll stash it in the next room, but if I’m even slightly wavering on it, it’s now a sign to me that it’s time to give it up. There will always be another deal, and besides…you know you want an excuse to go back to the thrift store.
Give them to someone who will put them to better use. I know you paid for them, but just let it go and let yourself have a room you love, rather than putting something in just to “use” it. Chances are, you got a great deal on it and just chalk it up as part of the whole process. It will feel so good to clear your stash out!
