blue chair makeover

20 October 2010

Remember this chair I found on Craigslist for $10 back in July?

I hauled her out back, pulled out my chemicals to give her a thorough cleaning and vacumming before bringing her inside.
july 2010 0040 1 and then painted the wood heirloom white. I used liquid sandpaper to prepare the wood for painting, then used a brush and then kids’ small paintbrushes to get the curves. Then, I just sanded the edges and made it look worn so when my kids continue to beat it up, it all looks like it’s meant to be. No re-upholstering here~I bought it because I actually liked the fabric, it’s durable, and it’s super comfortable. The living room is coming together! Gotta love what $10 and some paint can get you….

  1. i think it looks great and super comfortable!!!!
i belong to a local recycling group and am always stressing the importance of trying to reuse ( jazz things up) with order furniture.. i like the fact that you left the fabric and just did the wood. :)

  4. I love it... quick question, what type of paint did you use? I just purchased a solid wood antique dresser that is painted an off white color, it looks dingy. I want to paint it a brighter white and do the same thing you did with sandpaper. Did you use a flat, or semi gloss? What grit sandpaper did you use? Thanks for your response.

  11. Great job!!! She's so cute now. ;) I have a question that echoes Cyndee's. I just bought a buffet/credenza thingie at Salvation Army and was wondering if the liquid sandpaper would work with it. I want to paint it white....

  13. The liquid sandpaper takes off the shiny finish and prepares it for painting. If it's just stained, you should be fine using liquid sandpaper, primer, then paint. I used rustoleum heirloom white (satin finish), found in quart cans next to the spray paint at Home Depot. For the distressing, I just grab a piece of medium grit, tear of little squares and go to town! Good luck~

  16. This is great to read about, I have almost the exact same chair {with an ottoman} that I want to paint white as you did.

Thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to look for the liquid sandpaper at HD.

    It looks great!

  17. What a steal, great job! I love how the white paint actually made the blue fabric look a little different--like more robin's egg blue than country blue. Isn't it funny what a little white paint can do?!

  18. What cleaning chemicals did you use....I have a similar project.  Thanks  L

Oh goodness, I don't remember. Probably some Mrs. Meyers, a scrub brush, and
some Lysol? Hope it gets you started in the right direction :)
