thrifty treasures 8.23

22 August 2010

I wasn’t planning on yard-sale-ing this weekend, but there was a big church yard sale not too far from our house, so my daughters and I went. I could tell it was going to be good because there was a long line waiting for it to open at 8. This is one I will mark on my calendar~everything was completely organized, great junk, low prices.
 A big old jar with lid ($3)august 2010 035 1

Shutters! Not sure what I’m going to do with them yet, but it makes me feel better having them handy if inspiration hits…($2 for all)august 2010 043 1

2 scrabble games…we can always use the extra tiles for crafts like these ($1.50 for both)august 2010 027 1

Some scruffed up, vintage looking toys ($1) that I lovedaugust 2010 029 1

lampshades! love the pleated one on the left, I need to find me a sassy brassy chandelier for my daughter’s room for the small shades, and I may cover the one on the right?? It is a sweet bird print though…($1, $2 for all the chandelier shades, .50)august 2010 031 1

Weathered pots. (.50, .25, .10)august 2010 039 1

Cutest cash register ever! We have one we love from our Aunt Maryn, but it always seems to be a fight over who gets to play with it, or there are more than one “stores” set up in the playroom at any given time, so it will be good to have another one in the house… (.50)

A cute dress set for my daughter ($1)august 2010 042 1

This yard sale saved me about $50 in new shoes for my kids (and a trip to the store)… girls shoes ($1)august 2010 041 1

boys skechers (.50)august 2010 034 1

What do you think? Do you see any potential with any of this? Any advice on what I should do with a certain item?

  1. i keep looking for shutters to make a headboard for our bed! we don't have anything but a mattress and box springs on a frame right now... ghetto! :) so that's what i'd do with those babies if i'd found 'em! :)

  7. I love the bird shade too. In my junking travels, I found a lamp that is like that, only it has robins on it. Same colors, same style. In fact, it is in my computer room, here with me, waiting to be rewired.
    That was a good sale.

  11. You did really good, Melissa! Those shoes look brand new. I love that bird lampshade. Although it looks old, birds are so in again right now, that it works as is! Unless you can dress up the panels that don't have a bird on them with fabric or paper. Love the shutters and great find on the Scrabble games. My Goodwill never has games, but I'm always on the lookout.

WOW!! I NEVER find great deals like that at sales... a suggestion for the cute dress: have your daughter wear it (unless it fits you-- LOL!) same with shoes, but I'm sure you weren't looking for something to do with those items were you? No. The shutters may look good as wall art in your newly finished basement. The Scrabble tiles would look great in the glass storage jar on your "custom" built-ins until you use them on more nifty crafts... Love your blog!

  28. Those are some awesome finds! I soooo am in need of those shutters! I have two places for them if you can't find a use for them!;)

  29. I have 3 of those jars - two are "squatter" than the other. I've poured bags of flour and sugar in the two squatter ones. In those jars, I leave inside a small measuring cup - makes baking a breeze and pretty ups the counters and/or pantry area. In the taller jar I store my [mixed] collection of antique and modern cookie cutters. That is on display in my kitchen. I purchased that jar initially to store all of my knitting needles (I wanted something attractive - but somehow the notion of pulling the cookie cutters out from the shadows of storage came to mind once I arrived home with my purchase).
