basement sneak peek

11 May 2010

Here is a little project we’re working on in the playroom as you come down the stairs. My parents came out to visit and like a kind, sweet daughter, I put my dad to work. My husband, him, and me all helped with this one. Remember these alphabet letters I picked up at a yard sale (.25 for the whole set!) back in Texas? april 2010 046 1We just spray painted some very thin trim in my fav Rustoleum Colonial Red and finally got to use my $50 Black Friday nail gun to attach it! We nailed up the trim and then glued the letters to the wall. That door you see is to the playroom closet. Much more on that later….may 2010 010 1

I’ve still got to come up with something to put between the numbers and letters…we had to leave a space to make the corner work right. Any thoughts??may 2010 002 1
Here is where the board and batten will go. Thanks to my sweet Dad for putting the chair rail up to get me going:may 2010 009 1 And we’re off to a start!
What?
You want me to zoom out and show more?
Oh no, you don’t. Really, you don’t.

Really, you do?
Oh, all right. You know I love you if I can show this with no shame:

For what you can see, we went with soft, fluffy carpet that looks like dirt.
Exactly what I ordered. I love it~

  2. It is looking fantastic. Love the new doors! For the empty spot, well, A is for apples! Maybe a picture of a shiny red apple. Or a picture of an old red school house.

  3. *giggle* Love the zoomed out pic. The playroom is shaping up nicely. For the empty spot, I think Anita had a good idea with the apple.

  4. oh my! drooling over your carpet! and the thoughts of a playroom in the basement!

we have an unfinished basement. its the laundry dungeon.

and i ALWAYS put my dad to work when he comes too. switching out electrical sockets, hanging curtain rods, etc. maybe someday i'll convince him to stay long enough to finish my basement... we would both enjoy that one!

  6. Woo Hoo, Melissa! This is so exciting!

Soft carpet that looks like dirt is what's in our basement. Had to be carpet because of the sound needs in our media room. . . and if it has to be carpet, it needs to look like dirt!!

I love the letters. You could do a picture of "Dick and Jane and Spot" on their way to school, or an old red schoolhouse, or an apple as someone suggested. . . .

Looking so good!! Can't wait to see more.

  8. Love the idea! I was thinking about how when I was little, the teacher would put a gold star on my paper when I was learning to write. What about one of the metal stars I see at places like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc. I thought it would tie in perfectly if you are able to find the right size.

  9. Thank goodness you shared that picture of the room with us. I was beginning to think your home was perfect and mine, no so much.
You've made me feel SO much better - I'm almost convinced mine can look, not quite so bad!

  10. For the empty space on the border, what about a picture with your kids hands on them?

  11. Very neat play area, Melissa! What about punctuation for the empty space, a picture from a favorite book, a vinyl that says "Play Room".

  12. The letters are *busy* so I would paint the blank spot with the color of trim above and below the letters.

Love how this looks so far!

  17. I like the idea of a clock if you could find the right shape, or perhaps you can find a flag or a school house like mentioned on the web and print it off and cut it to size. Whatever you come up with be perfect!

  18. Love the full picture of the room. It looks so familiar. I'm working on our playroom myself and posted a very similar picture recently.

  19. What about a small black chalkboard, wood frame with your last name or favorite quote?

"Go confidentially in the direction of your dreams" is my favorite quote for high school seniors.

I love the Dick/Jane picture idea!

  20. A small black chalkboard with a wooden frame would look great. You could paint your last name or favorite quote on it.

  23. It looks great! I look forward to seeing the finished product!

Perhaps a small black chalkboard with Est. 2010, or when you were married, or the first year in "business". Clocks and apples are classic classroom items too!

  24. "looks like dirt." Love it!!! :) Your basement looks like my addition right now. ;)

    Love the Alphabet!!!

  26. Love that last pic! That's real life. I love the alphabet/number cards too. What a steal! Can't wait to see the rest!

  27. Love your ideas...
to fill the blank space you could take the numbers 1 and 0 to the copy store and color copy them onto cardstock to make the number 10. It might not fill the entire space but it would be a way to finish it off a little bit more. Looks like it will be a ton of fun down there!!!

  28. Mmmm...I'm loving all of these ideas. Keep them coming!!

  29. Hi Melissa -

Seeing your basement re-do brings back memories of re-doing mine when my girls were little. They are all grown now and I wrote a post about a table that my girls bought at a neighborhood yard sale that ended up being the highlight of the basement. Making the basement the kids place was the best home improvement project we did - it was great for their teenage years!!! For your empty space, why not find a chalkboard and make a clock out of it. You can buy a kit at a craft store. You could paint on the numbers. It will be a classic element even as your kids get older while serving a purpose, too.

  30. I think a clock would look great up there!

  33. I'm for painting it that rust color. I think that would make it look really nice.

Isn't it amazing how kids can trash a room in a matter of seconds? Crazy!

  34. Love the paint color. What is it?

    ReplyDelete
  35. a vintage picture of an owl would look great!!

  36. That picture with all of the toys on the floor is just the best! Love the carpet color too!

  37. Fun! I'd get a kid to draw an airplane or apple or something. Or stick figures on a chalkboard-like background.

  41. How about some form of an American flag? (If it matches whatever else you have in mind.)

    ReplyDelete
  42. That looks amazing! What about some punctuation to fill the space?!.,

    ReplyDelete
  43. For the space in between the numbers and letters you could make a chalk board. Try a daily equation or maybe a word of the day? I love it that you show your messes. I thought it was only me!

    ReplyDelete
  44. WOw...whay lucky kids...as far as something between the letters and the number how about a vintage classroom scene with kids in it, or something of that nature???? It would be really cute in a kids room! :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ooooh, I can't wait to see the final reveal! I love the pictures of the truth though. I am doing my playroom, nothing like yours but I like pictures of all the toys strewn around the room, it keeps it real!

  46. Empty space is for a clock

  51. I think a cute picture of an apple would look good there. Kinda reminds me of school and bringing an apple for the teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I did the alphabet in my playroom at it was offset a bit, so I needed something at the beginning. I grabbed a fake apple that I had in a bowl in my kitchen, sawed it in half & put it on the wall. I love the 3D look & I think ABC's & Apples go hand in hand:) I also think a cute star would look good there.

  53. When I stenciled the alphabet in my kids' playroom I used their handprints and dated below the handprint. Their little handprints served as a divider/spacer between my set of letters and numbers I had stenciled. I had about 4 spaces so I had enough for my two kiddos to each to their hand print twice. You could have your kids do their handprints on paper and then place them up!
