Laundry Room Makeover

It's been a fun ride~thanks for remembering it with me :) The fabulous Rhoda is having a Favorite Projects of 2009 Party over at her place~come share yours with everyone!

I can't wait to get going again once we get settled here~

a custom headboard

Our headboard was a particle board oak yard sale find that I had sanded and painted black to match our Target furniture.
I unscrewed the metal decoration from the back (I'm going to save it and see if I may be able to re-purpose it somewhere else)

Traced the shape onto a big piece of cardboard:

Then cut some quilt batting:

Ironed some white cotton duck fabric

Stapled it to the back of the cardboard with the batting in between:

And then I added some upholstery tacks along the edge. Now here is where I should have just used the nailhead trim on a roll, which would make it nice and even. I was trying to use a bunch of upholstery tacks I already had, but it would have been much easier and looked a million times better with the nailhead.

So....I love the idea, but need to switch it out for the nailhead trim instead of my upholstery tacks that look like I had my 2 year old put them on for me. :)
Sometimes ideas work, and sometimes they don't, but I wanted to share it with y'all...
Happy New Years Eve!

Home Tour: Master Bedroom After

Here is our master bedroom when we first moved in to our Texas home:
Doesn't it look "master"? ;)

We replaced all the carpet in the house ASAP and painted the walls Kwal's "Crisp Khaki". I bought the comforter set from Walmart and put up some temporary window mistreatments, but wanted a little different look about a year later

Here it is now:
We replaced the ceiling fan, painted our cedar chest heirloom white, used our Target black furniture, turned the existing comforter over to the solid side and used most of the existing pillows, put the bed on risers for additional storage underneath, (didn't quite get to making the bedskirt longer did I?) and bought 2 cream embroidered shams at TJMaxx for 9.99 to give it more of a custom, not out of the bag look.
I found the fabric at an after summer crazy fabric clearance~it's actually outdoor sun and shade fabric, but it looks all the same and has a nice, heavy crisp feel to it.
I cut, ripped, hot glued some of the edges over, and used Nester's fold, clip and poof treatment at the top. I found the blinds on the windows for $5 each at a yard sale, so the fabric was purely to dress the windows, not cover them.

The headboard.
The headboard.

Again, I wanted a more custom look, and it didn't turn out exactly as I had imagined, but I'll tell you what I did and what I wish I would have done tomorrow. :)

Happy Wednesday!

C'mon...give them a chance!

You may see cast offs like these in the post holiday sales for pennies because they look like this:

In many instances, a little red touchup will do wonders:

And make something feel brand new:

Bright green that no one wants? Pay .99

and give her a new coat of red for Valentines Day:

Think outside the box when you're perusing stores' holiday clearance, especially at 75 and 90% off. What would a new coat of paint/spray paint do? Could you re-purpose it for an upcoming holiday or a different room in your home? Turn it around so the dents don't show? Don't be afraid to show managers damaged merchandise..."how much do you want for these old, broken up balls?" Most just want it out of there....
Have you ever gotten a steal on a holiday clearance and re-purposed it?
